Mr. Brown is one of the real old settlers of Harvey county. He came to Kansas from Iowa in 1872 and took up a soldier’s filing on the north-west quarter of section 12. Here he lived for several years in this then sparsely settled country. Mr. Brown is uniquely distinguished in this community since he helped survey the beautiful little city in which we now gather to celebrate in honor of the Old Settlers of Harvey county.
In 1888 Mr. Brown and “Quaker” John Smith conceived the idea of organizing an Old Settlers Association. The first picnic was held August 9th, 1888, in the Pierce grove, and the following officers were elected:
President, Rev. G. W. Branine.
Secretary, John Smith.
Treasurer, J. B. Dickey.
About 300 people attended this first meeting of the Old Settlers. Since then this affair has grown until Harvey county now has one of the largest annual picnics in the state.
This year, which is the twenty-eighth annual gathering, Mr. Brown is president, and as spokesman for the city of Halstead, welcomes the people of the entire county to another friendly visit.

The Historic Carson Tree
Away back in the sixties when the trail of the white man was scarcely seen, this old elm tree which has weathered the passing storms of perhaps a thousand years as it majestically stands on the banks of the Black Kettle Creek, was a good shield and shade for roving hunter and his dusky maid, a token, a guide of the plains, and many are the mystic stories that surround its life.
At one time it was the admiration and pride of the Arapahoe and Osage Indian hunters, a mark from which the gold seekers, or forty-niners as they were called, measured the hiding place of their gold when trailed by the Indian brigade, and perhaps in days to come some sturdy farmer may unearth a wealth of dust placed there by some brawny hand, which has long since passed away and the distance and the point of compass from the old tree has been forgotten in the droop of years.
Here it was that Kit Carson and a band of emigrants were quietly resting from a tiresome march over the plains; they had camped for the night; the carcass of a buffalo lay by the camp

fire for the evening and morning meal. All was reported quiet and serene by the incoming scout, the moon sank slowly to rest amid a bank of western clouds. The camp was in peaceful slumber save the lone watchman of the caravan herd.
It was perhaps three o’clock in the morning; a drizzling, chill rain had set in when a band of Comanches broke the stillness of the night, completely surprising the little camp. The heroic old trapper sprang from his couch, and there within the wagon corral the whites stood like tigers at bay. Chief Black Kettle, from whom the little creek took its name, closed in from the west, while Chief Hard Rope came down the east bank of the creek. For a time the affray was terrific, but the Red Men were held aloof. The Indian yell was horrifying, ammunition was running low, and the whites were fearful of the result. Morning dawned, the clouds broke away, the sun came creeping over the hill, the Indians formed for their final charge and were surely and slowly closing in, when above the clatter and din the quick and experienced ear of Carson caught the fiery blast of the army bugle and soon a portion of the Seventh U. S. Cavalry, commanded by General Custer, attracted by the cry of battle, dashed to their relief. The Indians retreated, taking with them their dead and wounded.
Later on unearthing one of the mounds up the valley for inspection and truth, there lay the remains of an Indain warrior, bow and quiver by his side, and the skull told the story of Kit Carson’s unerring rifle.
The old Kit Carson tree is passing away, and I am led and inclined to believe that the curious marks that one time mantled its old trunk bore an index to historic facts that now and for time to come must and will remain hidden mysteries. M. S. I.

WINNERS WIN
Do You Want the Best
Where do you want to cast your lot, with the WINNERS or v/ith the losers?
Not what schools think or say they do, but what they actually do, is the thing for everyone to consider, who contemplates taking a business course.
Does our City Championship and now our State Championship, also twenty students passing the Civil Service Test, and fourteen now in the employ of Uncle Sam MEAN anything to you? This is what we are doing TODAY. RESULTS COUNT.
It does not cost any more to take our thorough course than a cheap course in other schools.
Our students are making a grand success. The demand for them is greater than the supply. Thirty-five were located in good positions during the past few weeks.
Arrange your course and if the work is not as we represent scholarship may be cancelled and tuition refunded.

LETTER FROM AN EARLY SETTLER
Coronado, Calif., July 18th, 1915. Arnold C. Todd, Secretary Old Settlers’ Society.
Dear Sir:—As the time for Old Settlers’ day draws near, my mind is carried back to the days I have spent in Kansas, dating back to 1871, and when I think of the wonderful change that has been during these years, it seems almost like a dream, and now as it will not be possible for me to be present on this occasion, I assure you I will be with you in thought at least, and this will only be the second meeting I have missed since the organization of the society, and I am proud I am a Kansan. Kansas gets some mighty fine compliments for the advance stand she has taken in prohibition as well as other advance reforms. And now wishing you a good day and a grand good time, I bid you all a kind good bye. Respectfully yours,
R. J. ELWOOD,
863 B. Ave. Coronado, Calif.

The Women’s Hour
The Harvey County Historical Society and the county Federation of Women join hands in making their bow before an Old Settler’s Association audience for the first time.
Their purpose in coming is to bring together the pioneer women of the county, to talk of the earlier days and possibly arrange for accumulating data for the compiling of a history of Harvey County as seen from a woman’s viewpoint.
The County Historical Society, organized in 1907, is made up of men and women who settled in Harvey County before the year 1880. Its purpose is to record historical facts and to preserve historical souvenirs identified with Harvey County and has for the gathering of such data a chairman in each township. Mrs. H. A. Hunter is the president, Mrs. S. R. Peters the secretary.
Its membership nears the one hundred mark, but the roll is rapidly being shortened, and, if the younger generation would know of the foundation upon which the home was built and the struggle it involved, such a record should be made speedily.
The Harvey County Federation of Women is also a county wide organization, intended to cement the interests of the entire womanhood of Harvey County. Organized in April 1915 it already has affiliated with it 185 women with room for many more. The work, as planned, covers five departments; Child Hygene, Home Economics, Education, Philanthrophy and Civics, all of vital interest to women.
It has as one officer a historian, at present, Mrs. W. D. Cong-don, whose purpose it is to compile the data contributed to-day along the line of county history and any that may come later.
Entire clubs have become members of the County Federation and a number of women have joined as individuals. Mrs. S. R. Peters of Newton is the president and Miss Jennie McGinn is the secretary.
An interesting meeting is planned to be held in Newton in September, the exact date of which and the details to be announ-ed through the papers of the county. It is the expectation that it will be an all day meeting and that Dr. Lydia BeVilbiss, formerly of New York, now of Topeka and head of the Child Hygiene Bureau of the State Board of Health will make the principal address. The meeting will be open to every woman in the county and the privilege is a rare one.

Respectfully yours,
R. J. ELWOOD,
