Speaker for the 27th Annual Meeting of the Old Settlers of Harvey County.
Mr. Allen is one of the really big men of the country—too big to be designated as hailing from Wichita. He is known as Henry Allen of Kan-sas the country over, ever since the Republican National Convention of 1912 when he was one of the floor leaders for Roosevelt Here his brilliant oratorical efforts attracted the attention of the entire country. He later followed Col. Roosevelt in-to the new Progressive Party and today is the nominee of that party for Governor of Kansas.
That he will well entertain the big crowd at today’s Picnic is an assured fact. Everyone should hear this bril-
liant editor of the Wichita Beacon.

of the Executive Committee which has entire charge of the arrange-ments for the 27th annual meeting of the Old Settlers. Mr. Rand has been a resident of Halstead for more than twenty years and is one of the live wire boosters for the Old Set-tlers at all times. He is giving free-ly of his time and energy to the end that the 27th meeting may be bigger and better than ever.
Mr. Rand is a member of the firm of Rand & Lehman, Contractors and Builders, which firm has erected many of the handsome business and residence properties in Halstead.
He has his forces well organized for the big Picnic and the outcome of the big affair is certain to be pleasing and satisfying to all vis-itors.

dent of the Old Settlers Organization at the meeting held last year and will preside over the deliberations on August 13. Mr. Morris had served as Vice President for several years and gave such general satisfaction that he was chosen to his present position without opposition.
He is a native of Medina county, Ohio, coming to Kansas in 1878 and locating on the northwest quarter of Sec. 30, Halstead township. He lived there for nearly a quarter of a century, but is now enjoying a re-tired life in a comfortable home in Halstead.
As a booster for the Old Settlers meetings he has always been depended upon to do his full share toward making them a success.

While he had pre-ceeded the grass-hoppers by but a few months, his faith in the country was not shaken by the visitations of the plaques and he has added to his original holdings until he can now enjoy the benefits accruing from a determination to accumulate some-thing for the proverbial rainy day. He is hale, hearty, and active, and in his big "Case 40" automobile, he is a familiar figure on the streets and highways of Harvey county.
Mr. Cadwell is an interesting con-versationalist, a good mixer and always is willing to push along the interest in the Old Settler gather-ings.

elected Secretary of the Old Settlers Organization at the meeting held in 1899, which makes a continuous service of fifteen years, as he is still at that post of duty. He succeeded John W. Smith, the first Secretary, who had served for twelve years.
Mr. Hinshaw located on a claim near Buhler in 1871, but a year later moved to Halstead township and for a number of years he has been a resident of Halstead City. He is engaged with his son in the Contracting business and writes insurance as a side line, but none of these duties interfere with his excellent service as Secretary of the the Old Settlers.

ecutive Committee this year were assumed by Kurt v. Riesen, one of Halstead’s most prominent young business men. This is by far the most exacting position in connection with the annual meeting as all of the clerical work and correspondence necessary to secure the various attractions falls to his lot. But Kurt is equal to almost any emergency and his capacity for handling business details has never as yet been reached, although he has the active management of the extensive business of the firm of Riesen & Dyck.
He is a native born Halstead boy and has made good as a successor to his father, Henry Riesen, in the extensive hardware business. He is a live wire, ever ready at the call of the public to give his best time and

energy toward the promotion of any-thing intended for the entertainment of the people on special occasions such as the Old Settlers Picnic.
The measure of success which attends this 27th annual event can in a large part be attributed to the untiring efforts of the young hustler who handled the duties in connection with the office of Secretary of the Executive Committee. He is a booster for the entire county and fortunate is the community which claims him as a resident.
Kurt Riesen is easy to approach on any subject, and if you have any kick coming about the way this picnic is being handled, he will listen to your tale of woe and continue to do what he considers his duty.

Dickey of Newton was elected President of the organization. He was the first Treasurer and held the office for many years. In fact the only way to pry him loose from the underflowing treasury was to pro-mote him to a higher office.
Mr. Dickey had been active in working up an interest in the Old Settlers Picnic. He is justly entitled to be called an Old Settler, having been continuously engaged in the drug business since 1871, a period of 43 years. This record for continuous business activity in one line of trade, has never been equaled in this county. Long may John Dickey be spared to grace the annual event with his presence!

THE FIRST BURIAL
Dick Lloyd of the 7th U. S. Cavalry Had an Impressive Funeral.
Probably the first white man buried in Harvey county, then a Territory, away back in the 50’s, when this garden spot was called a part of the Great American Desert, where the Indian was monarch of all and the buffalo roamed at ease and unmolested, while Fremont was surveying the Western Territories, attended by the 7th U. S. Cavalry Regiment, the first burial took place in what is now Harvey county.
The Indians were troublesome and cruel, ever on the alert with
scalping knife at hand, to attack the frontier settler or the emigrant train. A company or so was on its way to Fort Riley, then a frontier military Post. The red men were a continual menace. Captain Custer came to camp northwest of where Hutchinson now stands, known in the early days as the Stone Corral.
Dick Lloyd was a noble specimen of manhood, loved and revered by his comrades. Dick was on the after part of the night watch, which was considered the most dangerous when prowling Indians are near. In the early morn, Dick discovered a lone horseman a short distance away, near a sand hill, adorned with wild plum trees. But Dick was too slow! The Indian’s rifle rang out on the morning air and as the smoke in the

early sunlight lifted, Dick lay on the turf pierced through the breast and the Indian was speeding to the north-west. The bugle called and the race began, but the wild rover made good his escape.
Dick was carried to camp and cared for, but alas, who can tell the future. The troop continued their sorrowful march down the Arkansas valley, and when near where Turkey Creek meets the Little Arkansas river, Dick called a halt and after a few kind words to the boys, a clasping of hands, and Dick’s head fell back. Death had called him. The troop continued on south until about one mile north of Halstead on the hill between the farms of John Ryan and George Kirk, about seventy steps west of the road, a short dis-

tance south of the Halstead Cemetery, on the highest point of land, Dick Lloyd was laid to rest with military honors. As the report of the firing squad echoed across the valley and the smoke drifted away on the noonday breeze, the military burial had been concluded.
This story was related to me by John Corgan, an old and tried scout and Indian fighter of fame and worth. As he told the story, the tears streamed down his old and weather beaten cheeks. He said, “while long years have passed away, still my heart warms and mourns for poor, young promising Dick,” and said he, “I never in all my years of scout life, have I attended a more touching and sad interment.” As some of the boys sang the last fare-

JOHN RYAN, of Ex. Committee.
John Ryan is Vice-Chairman of the Executive Committee of five Halstead citizens having in charge all of the details in connection with the arrangements for the 1914 Picnic.
Jonn is a son of the late James
Ryan, former Sheriff of this county, who was elected President of the Old Settlers Organization in 1904. John has developed some of the worthy qualities of his father, in that he has an ambition to become Sheriff of Harvey county and that he | has always taken a prominent part in the affairs of the Old Settlers. He is an earlier settler than most of us, having been here since 1872, when he first saw the light of day on a claim four miles northwest of where Halstead is now located. He is always in the booster class, never a knocker. His home is on a fifty acre farm one mile north of Hal-stead and for recreation, if you wish to call it that way, he operates a blacksmith and wagon shop in the city.

For many years he represented Lake township on the list of township vice-presidents. He was one of the early promoters of the idea of having an Old Settlers organization and he has missed few of the annual meetings during the past twenty-six years. He is one of those sturdy pioneers who had faith in the country and even the grasshopper plaque did not shake that faith, until now he is the owner of many broad and valuable acres and is classed as one of the strong financial men of the county.
